Monochrome Mondays

I seem to have this habit of going shopping when I procrastinate and this weekend was no exception. Somehow in the midst of completing the two assignments I had to submit by Sunday evening I found myself on the Central Line heading straight for Oxford Circus.

I told myself that I was only going to buy some stick-on nails because I thought it was only fair that I deserved a pre-payday treat. I decided on the Elegant Touch Little Mix collection because I am obsessed with Monochrome and Jesy2 is just perfect for me at only £6 from Boots.

So there I was, minding my own business when I decided to go into Selfridges to lust over their windows when I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at Offspring to see if they had the black and white Roshe Run trainers that have been on my mind for ages!

I've wanted these trainers since I bought my Liberty print Roshe Runs back in April and fell in love instantly with how comfortable they were. It also doesn't hurt that they are very easy on the eye too! I would recommend these to anyone! It has been like mission impossible to find these trainers in my size so it would have been rude not to have bought them there and then for £69.99.

I just hope the next time I start procrastinating it doesn't result in me being over £70 lighter.
No regrets though!

Young women and politics

So this week I had the amazing opportunity to visit the beautiful Portcullis House (part of the Houses of Parliament) to listen to a panel hosted by Parliament Week and brought together by Cosmopolitan magazine to discuss the main issues at the forefront of young women's minds going into next years General Election.

The panel consisted of Cosmo's Editor-in-chief Louise Court, Margot James MP, journalist and author Bryony Gordon, presenter Gemma Cairney, Baroness Lolsa Young and singer Eliza Doolittle.

I studied Politics at college and so have always been interested in how our country is run so this was an unmissable opportunity to see all of the things I'd learnt at college to be applied to our real lives.

The main topics of conversation was what exactly it is that we want/ need to change to make things better for millennials. There was a general consensus that the current situation is not good enough for young people in this country with many feeling ignored and let down especially regarding tuition-fee gate.

Many of the panelists agreed that the government and the opposition need to do more to connect with young people  on a meaningful level rather than trying to 'get down with the kids' by having a twitter account. Which, in the case of David Cameron appears to just be an extension of the necessary 'white, middle class, middle aged' personality needed to become prime minister in this country rather than giving a glimpse of who he really is. As I type this post the number one trend on Twitter is #Cameronmustgo, surely this is a key sign that politicans need to do more to fully represent the public and encourage them to engage with politics.

Another issue was the seemingly archaic way in which we actually vote and how that may put young people off. Some argued that the way that we have to register and then go to a particular polling station is confusing to many people. It was suggested that the whole system of how we actually make our voices heard needs to be changed. One thing that worries me about this argument is that if we were to eventually allow people to vote online, it would trivialise the whole process. People place votes online all the time on various entertainment sites, so surely this could lead to the public not really caring as much about who they're voting for as they may just treat it like another BuzzFeed quiz.

The lack of female politicians was an unavoidable topic. The whole panel agreed that we do need more women in politics to fully represent issues that are exclusive to women as well as increasing diversity in a system that appears to be populated mainly by only one type of person. However, one audience member disagreed by arguing that she would prefer a fair meritocracy over a quota system. It was noted that heavy media scrutiny puts women off being involved in politics because, as seen in the Daily Mail, we know that whilst men tend to be judged on their competence, women tend to be judged on their outfit choices.

This blatant sexism belittles the successes of these women and treats them like they are there purely to look pretty.

On the whole it was agreed that politicians  of opposing partied need to dress back the theatricals and not be afraid to say when they agree with each other to make them seem more human, because as it was said in the talks, we all know that they'd be best friends if they didn't happen to lead opposing parties.

What do you think needs to change?

Kim Kardassian

Whether you like it or not, if you've been on the internet within the last 24 hours you will have seen Kim Kardashian and Paper Magazine's attempt to 'Break the internet' with their winter 2014 issue's photo shoot.

The first picture we were all treated to was of fearless Kim showing off the naked bum that the world is so obsessed with. Next, a more SFW pic was published showing Kim balancing a champagne glass on her backside.
And then just when we thought it was safe to return to our computers, there it was, Kim went full frontal.

On all of the Paper magazine photos Kim just drips with an infectious level of confidence. Far from slamming her for revealing her body even though she has a young child, I am praising her for being able to pose like that knowing that millions of people will be sharing those images.

So many people have been quick to jump and criticise Kim but the full frontal pic is just an extension of the whole 'Kim Kardashian' pphenomenon No part of Kim's life is private, we know all about her family, what she wears, where she goes, who she dates. The lack of privacy that surrounds Kim makes it obvious that her next step would be to do a full nude photoshoot. My interpretation of this photoshoot is that it's just a symbol of who we have made her rather than a narcissistic display.

The Paper article discusses the fact that Kim is essentially famous for being famous and it is undeniable that she is pretty talented at that.

What are your thoughts on Break the internet? Is it just overt narcissism? Let me know in the comments!

The John Lewis Effect

Last week John Lewis blessed us all with their latest Christmas advert. This year's ad features Monty the Penguin or should I say #MontyThePenguin and follows him on his quest for love. SPOILER ALERT it ends with the revelation that Monty is actually a young boy's favourite cuddly toy and not his pet.

John Lewis Christmas adverts have told us the stories of the Hare and the Bear, The Snowman willing to risk his life for his love and the young boy who was so excited to give his parents their gift. The ads are loved not only for their heartwarming stories but also the amazing soundtracks. This year's features the beautiful voice of Tom Odell and his Beatles cover and last year's Snowpatrol cover by Lily Allen helped to reboot her career after her hiatus though she later admitted to only earning £8000 for that song.

Over the last few years John Lewis have managed to turn their Christmas adverts into an anticipated event  that is so much more than them simply trying to sell individual items to consumers. Marketing is a career that I am interested in pursuing after university and a phrase that stuck in my mind from Google's head of Marketing Nishma Robb last month at a careers event was that marketing is all about 'Purpose not product'.

This is a concept that John Lewis have well and truly taken on. They have found a way to make people become excited about Christmas on the whole and it's 'true meaning' focussing on relationships and the emotions surrounded around giving and receiving gifts rather than how much money you spend on specific consumer items.

I just think that it is amazing that John Lewis have been able to engage the British Public by having everyone talking about their advert. #Montythepenguin was trending on Twitter for days and raised enough awareness to have over 12 million YouTube views in less than a week. I can only imagine the increase in traffic John Lewis would have received from this campaign with people looking to find gifts that will 'Give someone the Christmas they've been dreaming of'.

I would love to one day to be part of a process that helps to create a campaign much like this one day, and to find out what it takes to capture the hearts of the nation.
